Sometimes bumping your head or suffering an accidental blow to the chin can cause you to bite down hard on your tongue. In some severe cases the damage can cause pain and bleeding. In a moment such as this, you will likely need to apply some basic first aid, while seeking emergency treatment from a dentist.

If your tongue is bleeding profusely and you are in extreme pain or you have bitten through your tongue you should strongly consider going directly to the Emergency Room.

In a less-severe situation, a gentle rinse lukewarm saltwater can help clear away excess blood or debris from your mouth. Antiseptic mouthwash should be avoided as it can significantly irritate traumatized soft tissues.

If necessary, you can try to wrap your tongue in a few layers of sterile gauze and apply light pressure to help minimize any bleeding. If you can’t easily grip your tongue you might be able to place a pad of sterile gauze to the area before pressing your tongue to the roof of your mouth.

Consuming a standard dose of an over the counter pain medication might help minimize some of the immediate pain.
