Are you thinking about getting orthodontics for yourself or a member of your family? Sometimes, the need for braces may be obvious when you look at your or your child’s smile and notice improperly aligned teeth or a noticeable underbite or overbite. Or your dentist may suggest that braces or some other bite correction may be in order because of damage to your teeth or other problems.

If the time has come for orthodontics, our dentists will be happy to see you. At your initial consultation, we will give you an examination, including X-rays and possibly impressions of your bite. Then we will discuss what type of correction will be right for you, such as traditional braces, clear aligners, or lingual braces.

If you get braces, see your regular dentist before your appointment for a cleaning and exam. Your teeth need to be cleaned before the dentist can place your braces, and having it done beforehand will save time on the day or your appointment. When the big day arrives, brush and floss your teeth, and rinse with mouthwash. The process of getting braces is not painful, although you might experience some initial discomfort. You can expect your mouth, teeth and gums to be a little tender after your braces are in place, and you should stick to soft foods for the first few days. The dentist will give you a list of foods you should avoid while you wear your braces and instructions on how to brush and floss them.
